Climate Journalism Tells the Truth. Even When It Isn't Easy.
A holiday story about getting all the facts...from 1986.
I hope you’re having a fantastic holiday and not reading every email that reaches your inbox! I’m resending this one in case you missed it last week.
The truth isn’t always easy to hear. But it’s (almost) always worth telling.
This holiday season, I’ve been thinking back to the day when our son, age 4, decided he owed it to his classmates to let them know that Santa Claus wasn’t real. We heard about it when we got a call from one of his junior kindergarten teachers.
Our son wasn’t trying to upset anyone or be the smartest kid in the room. He just thought the truth mattered, and that no one should ever be misled.
Who knew how important those principles would be today.
It’s been 38 years since the uproar in Tricia and Barbara’s JK class, and I’m guessing our son’s friends have all recovered from the shock. But they’re living in a world where it’s ever more important to protect our ability to tell and read the truth.
That’s where independent climate journalism comes in. And it’s why we ask for your help at this time of year to keep The Energy Mix on the job.
When our son made his 4-year-old stand in 1986, few even understood that climate change was happening. Not unless they worked for Exxon, the American Petroleum Institute, or any of the other big institutions that knew the truth and kept it from the rest of us.
Decades later, the crisis is upon us. And there are so many stories that need urgently to be told. With your tax-deductible donation to our Climate News for Climate Solutions project in partnership with Small Change Fund, we can keep on telling them.
The tough news about the fossil industry greenwashing its products, lying about its emissions, relentlessly pushing back on regulation, and grinding international climate negotiations to a standstill.
The hopeful stories about citizens and communities driving down emissions and taking charge of their energy future.
All that and more, coming into a year when we’ll need to keep up the pace on climate solutions while Donald Trump re-enters the White House.
You can count on The Energy Mix and The Energy Mix Weekender to bring you the climate news you need to decide your next, best step to make a difference.
With your tax-deductible donation, we can keep on writing the news you need to hear. And building the networks to deliver those stories farther and wider.
We’re a long way from Tricia and Barbara’s classroom. The stakes are a lot higher, here and now, than they were there and then.
But I’m really just asking you to take a stand the way our son did. A stand for the truth. For what you know is right.
Even when the story is hard to tell.
