It was a grievous assault on tobacco-makers—until it wasn’t—when they were banned from pitching products that kill people when used as directed. In the end, the culture changed. Now it's oil's turn.
Thank you for writing this Mitchell. The sad truth is that the NDP party leadership race in Alberta is already starting to look like most of the top candidates will be lining up to distance themselves from Angus and and this campaign in particular. Most Albertans, like most Canadians, want to see meaningful action on climate change and yet, our politicians repeatedly fail to represent us.
That's so disappointing, Jody. Especially when Alberta has the most to lose if we *don't* prepare for the shift that is barreling down the track at us, like it or not, and the most to gain from actually embracing it. I know you know this, but Alberta was leading the country in renewable energy installations until the provincial government announced a seven-month moratorium on new projects. Investor confidence, anyone?
Their story said, '“It is prohibited for a person to promote a fossil fuel, a fossil fuel-related brand element or the production of a fossil fuel,” reads the act,'
They are misleading the reader by omitting the remainder of the sentence. The act reads, "It is prohibited for a person to promote a fossil fuel, a fossil fuel-related brand element or the production of a fossil fuel except as authorized by the provisions of this Act or of the regulations." By omitting the part after the last occurrence of 'fossil fuel' they are lying by omission.
Oh, c'mon, now. You're asking them to actually read the bill and report it accurately when there are clicks to be harvested, audiences to be inflamed, and ideologies to be satisfied??
An egregious example of false advertising appears on some of our (Calgary) city buses. They bear signs which say that they are powered by 'natural' gas (a.k.a. fossil gas) which is 'cleaner' and 'better'. Two lies for the price of one.

That sounds similar or identical to ads we've been seeing on Ottawa city buses. I think they come from the Canadian Gas Association? But not certain.
